"HiWis" - paid scientific internships

HiWi contracts can be given for voluntary lab internships of 8 weeks or more; or for regular non-lab tasks (IT upgrade, stockroom).
Note: BSc, F-Praktikum or MSc internships cannot be HiWis, since they are integral to your course of studies.

HiWi rules from 2023

Rules changes are occuring during 2023. Start by collecting the same Unterlagen as for a PhD or postdoc contract (see Get Your Contract page) and contact Christin Scharping for advice.

HiWi rules 2022

Einen Hiwi-Vertrag wird in €/Monat gerechnet, offiziell dann umwandelt in “X Stunden/Woche” (if you have no BSc, a BSc, or an MSc, the hourly rates are different, which is reflected on the weekly hours for a contract).

2 Steps to HiWi contract

(1) Print, fill out and scan (a) HiWi Help Page; scan (b) Hochschulabschlusszeugnis, (c) latest Immatrikulationsbescheinigung if DE student (or passport/visa if non-DE-citizen), and make a PDF of (d) your CV.
(2) Email Christin.Scharping@cup.lmu.de cc OTS, stating your HiWi start and end dates, how many hours/week it will be, what funding source it will be paid from (see OTS), attaching the four files from part 1, and stating that you attached those files.

Christin checks the data and forwards it to Innenstadt; they prepare the rest. NB: It takes them at least 6 weeks so do this in advance! Christin will then get a HiWi contract back to you to sign. Welcome to the group!

In special cases, HiWi work is instead treated as an ordinary TVL contract - recent info is here; more will be posted when known.
For special questions (foreign students), can phone Referat II.2 (eg. 5766 Eleonore Stelzig; 6859 Petra Baute; or 5758 Eva Burger-Heinrich).*

FAQ:
1. “Mit der Steuersituation kann die HR-Abteilung nicht weiterhelfen; die Steuerklassen widerspiegeln Ihre persönliche Situation."
2. "Falls es auch ein andere Arbeitgeber (Nebenjob) gibt, muss er auch von Ihrer Zweitbeschäftigung bei uns Bescheid wissen.”
3. After the HiWi is over, if your HiWi funding comes from a special source, you will need to fill out timesheets F43 showing when you actually worked; but Gabriele will tell you if that is needed (usually not).
* for info only: she will give you filled-out copies of F8 Verfassungstreue, F76 Hiwi Contract, and Info sheet F46c to sign (updated forms available through LMUServicePortal; these are current for 2019). Forms F38 and F39 also used to be needed (2017) but this apparently not any more. Old form F76 kept for legacy purposes.
